New City Church has been meeting together now for around a year, and we feel now is the time for us to become a “real” church and do the whole public launch thing. I’ve read lots of books over the years about how a church plant’s public launch should go. But thankfully I’ve forgotten most of it. I do remember something about mailing out thousands of cards, hanging stuff on people’s mailboxes, and even dropping invitations from a helicopter. For many churches, launching according to tried and true paradigms might be the way to go. There are many great ideas out there on how to launch a church plant into a functioning, self-sustaining New Testament church. But, simplicity is the name of the game for New City Church. Somethings tells me we’ll do this thing contrary to the script, just like we’ve done everything else so far (Oh, the stories we could tell). But, we’re okay with this. We’re going to try to do what God wants of us and follow his script for this church.
From the outset, we haven’t been about pomp and circumstance. There are far more churches doing it far better than we ever could. If you’re looking for a worship service that ranks just below the Second Coming, you won’t find it here. I can’t speak for any other church, but our church’s primary goal is to direct all the glory, praise, and spotlight right back to the Head of the church, Jesus. That’s what being a church is all about anyway, right? Directing all eyes and hearts toward the One who lived, died, and rose again for us. We’re very aware that Christ is still being formed in us, and we have not arrived. Hopefully, you’ll recognize that aboyt us, too. We are a church that values simplicity. We are a church that genuinely loves one another, and loves and accepts people from all walks of life – no matter the baggage. Why? Because that’s our story also.
So anyway, here’s the part where we invite you to come to our public launch service. We chose April 20th because that’s Easter (or as we like to call it, Resurrection Day) and it seemed like a good way to say to you here’s your fresh start, just like Christ’s resurrection from the dead that morning was God’s way of saying to us, “Here’s your fresh start.” Easter is one of those holidays when lots of people who don’t normally attend church, attend church. It’s a good day to start over if you’ve been out of church for a long time for whatever reason. It’s a good day to come investigate the claims of Christianity if you are not a Christ-follower already. Easter is a good day to start something new. So, be our treasured guest and come gather with a new family on Easter Sunday this year!
